I feel as though lately I have been getting a ton of questions about my hair! How did I grow it so long? How do I style it? and How do I keep it healthy?! I figured I would throw together this post for anyone wondering or someone who might be looking to grow out there hair and keep it looking healthy.
A little background on my hair is that it is naturally dark brown with red-ish undertones. I obviously have a balayage so I will have another blog post coming soon about how I maintain the blonde with such dark hair. Since I have stripped the color of 80% of my hair, it tend to lean on the dry side. I have found the perfect ways to keep my hair looking shiny, healthy and damage free!
Deep Conditioning Treatments + OILS
I use a deep conditioning treatment once a week to help keep my ends hydrated. You don't need to go crazy and buy the most expensive one out there, I use one from the drugstore and it works wonders. I also use a hair oil on my ends, only to keep them smooth since my ends are the driest part of my hair.
Limit Additional Product
Besides the hair oil on the ends of my hair, I try to avoid using any additional hair products (mousse, hairspray, gel, etc). I am lucky to have calm wavy hair, so it does not get too crazy if I don't use product. It helps my hair stay light, soft and also reduces build up so I don't have to was my hair that often. I know not everyone can go product free but try to make sure the products you use won't dry out your hair further, or have any harmful chemicals in them.
This varies depending on the activities you do and your hair type, but I will put off washing my hair for as long as possible. I can go 3-4 days and it still look good, this is seriously what makes my hair grow so quickly. I am not stripping my hair of essential oils coming from my scalp everyday. So the longer you can go without washing the better! Dry shampoo will be your best friend, I am OBSESSED with the Detox one from Drybar.
This is seriously one of the most important tips I can give to keep your hair healthy. NO HEAT! I use heating tools on my hair maybe once every two weeks, if that. I really only curl my hair for special occasions or for photoshoots. I don't even own a hair dryer, I just let my hair air dry. If you need to use heat on your hair I would suggest skipping the dryer and solely using the straightener/ curling iron (with a heat protectant). Let your hair air dry over night to reduce as much damage as possible.
Silk pillowcases are gentle on your hair and will not cause breakage during the night. It is also good for your skin as well. I would suggest buying a few and changing them out at least once a week.
Healthy Diet + Vitamins
Eating a healthy diet is so important if you are wanting to grow out your hair. I would recommend making sure you are drinking enough water and eating a balanced diet. I also suggest taking a good multivitamin!
Lastly, when visiting the salon, make sure you are very specific when you go in for a cut. I never say, “Just cut off the dead ends” because they might cut off a ton of hair... I always am specific. I usually ask them to take 1.5 inches off the bottom every 6 months or so. That way I know I am keeping my length that I have worked so hard to grow, and I am keeping my hair looking healthy.
