I get so many DM’s on Instagram weekly, all asking the same/similar questions. How do I start a blog? I decided this would be a perfect post to share with those of you who want to start a blog or have a blog currently and aren’t really doing much with it.
Why Do You Want To Start A Blog?
Anyone can start a blog. You don’t need a million followers on Instagram to feel worthy of starting a blog. I started my first blog five years ago and I maybe had 500 Instagram followers. I just wanted to write and share my photos. I fell on and off with blogging because I never really had an intention. I just wanted a blog to use a few months a year. So I want you to ask yourself, Why do I want to start a blog?
What will your blog be about? Who will be reading your blog? What can I bring to the table that is unique? Creating an intention and knowing exactly what you want to accomplish will be so helpful as you continue this journey.
I also want to add that growth takes time. So make sure you’re doing this because you absolutely love it. The amount of time and effort you will put in isn’t worth it if you aren’t passionate.
Creating Your Site + The Design
Blogger, WordPress & Squarespace are all amazing options to start your blog and create your site.
There are a million and one credible resources online on the technical side of building a website, I would really recommend looking on Pinterest and you’ll find a ton. Those are three I recommend and the ones I have the most experience with.
I currently use Squarespace for my website because they make it so easy! Squarespace has limitations on the designs you can have, but the templates they have are very customizable and breathtakingly beautiful. They are always adding new templates as well.
The design of your blog can really make or break it, no matter how amazing the content is. People are visual and having a visually pleasing blog is really important. I personally find blogs with a ton of banners and ads a huge turn off. Clutter stresses me out so having a site that is simple and easy to navigate makes a huge difference. I always get people to look over my blog design before I publish. I have them navigate my site and give feedback on links that are broken, dead ends, pages that don’t load, etc. Having someone you trust look over your blog is a great way to know what you need to fix before you go live.
Staying Organized + On Schedule
This is one of my most important tips! Staying organized is so key to staying on schedule and getting content out when promised. I created my own in depth content calendar so I can plan out and create posts in advance. This helps me not feel rushed and throwing together a half ass post last minute. I try my best to never publish the same day I write my post. I always like to take a day or two to let the content digest and look it over with fresh eyes to make sure I don’t need to edit or add something. I recommend creating your own content calendar ( a simple paper planner will do the trick), keep a running list of blog post ideas and topics to pull from and posting at least once a week if you are able too.
Blogging is very time consuming and constantly coming up with new ideas can be tricky. I have noticed when I sit down and try to come up with blog post ideas I actually can never come up with anything good. I have a few little tips that have helped me always have something to write about.
1. Ask your audience
I always go to Instagram to see what my readers are interested in reading. They are the ones after all who will find the content valuable and I want to write about what they are currently needing in their lives.
2. Keep a Notebook Handy (or use your IPhones notes app)
I have a little tab in the notes app on my phone titled “Blog Ideas + Brainstorm”. I always find inspiration in my daily life of things to write about and I keep them in there for quick reference. The conversations I have, the places I see and the things I hear about I find make great post ideas.
This is a quick but important tip, make sure one of the first things you do is create an email list! This is a great way t let your readers know of new content. You can also send special tips and tricks to your readers so there is an incentive for them sign up. If you haven’t signed up for my email list make sure to scroll all the way to the bottom on the page and sign up with your email! I send out alerts when a new post is live as well as exclusive content for my email list subscribers only <3
